Wheel of Fortune 2009 (remake single)

"Cycle of Fortune" is the first single released by Swedish pop grouping Ace of Base, from their debut album, Happy Nation. It was outset serviced to Danish radio in early 1992 through Mega Records but failed to pick up much back up. When re-promoted for a third time and released in stores on 29 June 1992, information technology entered the official Danish singles chart at number six, earlier later climbing to number two. It wasn't released elsewhere in Europe until 1993, following the success of "All That She Wants".

"Wheel of Fortune" is a reggae flavoured trip the light fantastic toe-pop song written by Jonas Berggren and Ulf Ekberg. It was recorded in Studio Decibel in Stockholm, Sweden for a budget of SEK 30,000. It did not enter the charts when it was released for the kickoff time. It was the third re-release of the single that entered the charts after radio stations and clubs started to play it. The song peaked at number-one in Norway, and was a Acme x hit also in Austria, Belgium, Kingdom of denmark, Federal republic of germany, holland, Spain and Switzerland.

Critical reception [edit]

AllMusic editor Jose F. Promis said the vocal is "stellar".[two] Nikola Nedeljkovic Gøttsche from Danish newspaper Dagbladet Information noted "its immediate melodic popular appeal and the combination of dancefloor pop and the fashionable warm reggae".[3] Swedish newspaper Göteborgsposten described it as a "dance-song with some Bad Boys (Inner Circle) and Dr. Alban rhythms, just with more pop direction." The reviewer complimented Linn Berggren'southward voice, adding that it "makes me remember of Angel for a while".[iv] Andrew Balkin from Kingston Informer wrote that "the Aces go downbeat" on "Wheel of Fortune" and "Happy Nation", stating that both songs "have a soul/dance feel nigh them and wouldn't be out of place on the dance floor, or setting the mood in a smoky club."[v] Liverpool Echo said it is "cannily shut" to "All That She Wants", with "its reggae-ish beat and merely as catchy."[6]

Music writer James Masterton viewed it equally "poppy dub-reggae" in his weekly UK nautical chart commentary.[7] Pan-European magazine Music & Media described it as "oriental-tinged".[viii] Alan Jones from Music Week rated the single four out of five, writing that the group "render with another subdued reggae singalong that as well suggests Opus's Alive Is Life hitting. Fewer of the commercially-pleasing devices that exemplified All That She Wants hateful it will be a smaller hitting though another Tiptop 10 placing seems likely."[9] James Hamilton from the magazine's RM Dance Update deemed it "another Boney M-ish inane not sequiturs filled Swedish pop lurcher".[10] Chuck Campbell from Scripps Howard News Service called it a "reggae-paced" number.[11]

Chart performance [edit]

The single entered the Danish charts at number vi on the nautical chart dated x July 1992. Information technology would keep to peak at number two in October, with the follow-upward single "All That She Wants" overtaking it at number ane. In the United Kingdom, "Bike of Fortune" was released every bit the second unmarried and it reached number xx in its second week at the UK Singles Chart, on 29 August 1993.[12] It was also a number one hitting in Norway, and made information technology to the Tiptop 10 besides in Austria, Belgium, Germany, the Netherlands, Espana and Switzerland. Additionally, it peaked inside the Top 20 as well in Finland, Iceland and Ireland. On the Eurochart Hot 100, "Bicycle of Fortune" reached the Elevation 5, peaking at number 5. Information technology earned a gold record in Germany, with a sale of 250,000 singles.

1992 version [edit]

The original version's music video was directed by Viking Nielson and features all iv original members. In a 2018 interview, Ulf Ekberg said that they had $1000 to shoot the video.[16]

It begins with Linn singing. A woman is sitting in a chair on the eye of a large wheel of fortune. Then different characters appear along the video. Like a boxing blonde, a fiddling girl playing with an hourglass, a helpmate in an wedding clothes, an angel playing with a gilt ball and an older couple. Sometimes the adult female in the chair also appears with a man or with the older couple. In between these characters, we see the four members of Ace of Base performing continuing together in a circle with their backs against each other. Linn sometimes sings in the chair on the bicycle. Other times she sings standing with Jenny. Joker and Buddha are seen playing on different instruments such equally keyboard, drum, and trumpet. Occasionally, a clock turns in the background.
